Great Tit

Tweet of the Day : The Great Tit : Another Great Tit... I think that that is because there are so many in our garden. As soon as I put out new nuts in the feeder out they came, hanging comfortably under the feeder much to the pigeons annoyance….who have to wait underneath for any titbits.

MINE!

Tweet of the Day : MINE! : two Coal Tits fight for a possible nest building item…trying to make it look as if they are really pulling at the grass of straw is difficult…you need to get action in to it….not sure I got there this time I might have another go..

Coot

Tweet of the Day: a Coot: Quite common in our local pond….great fun to see the chicks in the Springtime All-black and larger than its cousin, the moorhen, it has a distinctive white beak and 'shield' above the beak which earns it the title 'bald'. Its feet have distinctive lobed flaps of skin on the toes, which act instead of webs when swimming. It patters noisily over the water before taking off and can be very aggressive towards others.

Bearded Tit

Tweet of the Day : Bearded Tit :  You wouldn't want to be late putting out the bird food in the morning with this one around….frighten the day-lights out of you….A brown, long-tailed bird, usually seen flying rapidly across the top of a reedbed. Males have black 'moustaches' rather than 'beards'. They are sociable and noisy , their 'ping' calls often being the first clue to their presence

Osprey

Tweet of the Day : Osprey :  Not easy to find..I could have tramped for miles and climbed a very tall tree to get this view holding on with one hand and drawing with the other………but no there was an easier way I found one on the internet….and here he is…. The long wings are angled, bending at the 'wrist' which has a black patch contrasting with the white wing linings, and at a distance it could be mistaken for a large gull. This spectacular fish-eating bird of prey is an Amber List species because of its historical decline (due to illegal killing), and low breeding numbers.

Another Dartford Warbler

Tweet of the Day : Another Dartford Warbler : It's always interesting to do another version of a painting you have uploaded. I always look at them and think "you know that would great if I'd thought of viewing it from a different angle"….and so it goes. I like the over all shape of this one, and the colour.

Barn Owl

Tweet of the Day : Barn Owl : I know another Barn Owl…but I find them endlessly fascinating to look good from every angle and particularly at night when the light of there moon catches them…With heart-shaped face, buff back and wings and pure white underparts, the barn owl is a distinctive and much-loved countryside bird.

Meadow Pipit

Tweet of the Day : The Meadow Pipit :A small, brown, streaky bird, or SBJ's as they are known here in the UK (  small-brown-jobs) it is the commonest songbird in upland areas and its high, piping call is a familiar sound. In flight it shows white outer tail feathers and in the breeding season it has a fluttering 'parachute' display flight.

Hampshire Magazine

I have just had this article about my work in the July 2015 edition of The Hampshire Life magazine
the author Sandra Smith lives in Oxfordshire so we did the interview via skype, a new one for me….
It included a quote from an old friend of mine from the USA John Stobart the renown marine artist
who I spent a few years with  in Boston USA in the early 80's  running a gallery for him. Thanks John great quote.

Dipper

Tweet of the Day : The Dipper : A short-tailed, plump bird with a low, whirring flight. When perched on a rock it habitually bobs up and down and frequently cocks its tail. Its white throat and breast contrasts with its dark body plumage. It is remarkable in its method of walking into and under water in search of food usually up stream.

Another Dartford Warbler

Tweet of the Day : Another Dartford Warbler : Again,  another attempt at "getting it right" it seems to me that you can't get it right every time ..you think you have it but  it's like doing a first sketch and as soon as you finish another idea appears and you have to paint that…oh hum the artists life…etc,,,

Cuckoo

Tweet of the Day : The Cuckoo  :The cuckoo is a dove-sized bird with blue grey upper parts, head and chest with dark barred white under parts.  They are summer visitors and well-known brood parasites, the females laying their eggs in the nests of other birds, especially meadow pipits, dunnocks and reed warblers.

Stonechat

Tweet of the Day : The Stonechat : Stonechats are robin sized birds. These birds are frequently seen flicking their wings while perched, often doing so on the tops of low bushes. As its name suggests, birds utter a sharp loud call that sound like two stones being tapped together. They breed in western and southern parts of the UK, but disperse more widely in winter.

Magpie

Tweet of the Day :  The Magpie  :With its noisy chattering, black-and-white plumage and long tail, there is nothing else quite like the magpie in the UK. When seen close-up its black plumage takes on an altogether more colourful hue with a purplish-blue iridescent sheen to the wing feathers, and a green gloss to the tail. Magpies seem to be jacks of all trades - scavengers, predators and pest-destroyers, their challenging, almost arrogant attitude has won them few friends. Non-breeding birds will gather together in flocks….yes…boo!
