Roseate Tern

Tweet of the Day : The Roseate Tern  : A fleeting visit to the shore line…Similar in size to a common tern but very white-looking, with long tail-streamers, a black cap and a black beak with a reddish base. In summer adults have a pinkish tinge to their underparts which gives them their name. It is one of our rarest seabirds and whose severe, long-lasting and well documented decline make it a Red List species.

Tweet of the Day : The Gannet :  Just had a break at the seaside plenty of these about....Adults are large and bright white with black wingtips. They are distinctively shaped with a long neck and long pointed beak, long pointed tail, and long pointed wings. At sea they flap and then glide low over the water, often travelling in small groups. They feed by flying high and circling before plunging into the sea. It breeds in significant numbers at only a few localities and so is an Amber List species.

Red Kite

Tweet of the Day  : Red  Kite  : Not too many of these either on our bird feeders….This magnificently graceful bird of prey is unmistakable with its reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail. It was saved from national extinction by one of the world's longest running protection programmes, and has now been successfully re-introduced to England and Scotland. It is an Amber List species because of its historical decline.

Golden Eagle

Tweet of the Day : Golden Eagle : Not too many of these on our bird feeder…..but someone is eating a lot of nuts…and we do have squirrels so it might be them….A huge bird of prey, with only the white-tailed eagle larger in the UK. With its long broad wings and longish tail, it has a different outline to the smaller buzzard. It likes to soar and glide on air currents, holding its wings in a shallow 'V'. Eagles have traditional territories and nesting places which may be used by generations.

Tweet of the Day :  The Starling   :Smaller than blackbirds, with a short tail, pointed head, triangular wings, starlings look black at a distance but when seen closer they are very glossy with a sheen of purples and greens. Their flight is fast and direct and they walk and run confidently on the ground. Noisy and gregarious, starlings spend a lot of the year in flocks. Still one of the commonest of garden birds, its decline elsewhere makes it a Red List species.

House Sparrows

Tweet of the Day : House Sparrows : We have a nest of these little fellows in our roof…they have been coming here for years..our family in London haven't seen one for a long while. Noisy and gregarious, these cheerful exploiters of man's rubbish and wastefulness, have managed to colonise most of the world. The ultimate avian opportunist perhaps. Monitoring suggests a severe decline in the UK house sparrow population, recently estimated as dropping by 71 per cent between 1977 and 2008 Some signs of recovery recently…..

Black-Headed Gull

Tweet of the Day : Black-Headed Gull :  . Black-headed gulls are sociable, quarrelsome, noisy birds, usually seen in small groups or flocks, often gathering into larger parties where there is plenty of food, or when they are roosting….watch out for your ice creams …..on the beach.

Song Thrush

Tweet of the Day : Song Thrush :   I had a hard job making this song thrush look as if it was singing……I also tried a different way of starting this painting by drawing it first in pen and then applying paint….interesting……..did it work?

Tug-of -War

Tweet of the Day :  Tug - of War  :  Another bird fight….I must stop this….last one..They are fun to paint though. They do spend a lot of time fighting when you look at them in the garden…I suppose it because of the food we put out…that is bond to cause problems…..

Tawny Owl

Tweet of the Day :  Tawny Owl :  Can't stop myself painting owls…I might be needing help soon…but they are great fun to paint….so that's that! This one is waiting for dusk to arrive and then he'll be silently flying to get his supper. I like the red/orange/yellow background with him painted simply in the foreground.

Nesting Fight

Tweet of the Day : Nesting Fight : Fun to see in the garden and fun to paint as well….action is what we want….these two at war over a nesting strand as if there wasn't enough stuff lying around the garden as it was…..we once put out the contents of an old nesting box to see what would happen……it was all gone with in minutes.

Windy Hawfinch

Tweet of the Day : Windy Hawfinch  :  I love it when the wind blows birds feathers….it's a challenge to painting…The UK's largest finch, it has a massive, powerful bill. Always shy and difficult to see, the hawfinch has become even more enigmatic in recent years with a decline in many of its traditional breeding areas.
