Longtailed Tit

Tweet of the Day : Longtailed Tit  :  Saw one of these on "the squirrels nuts " the other day with a pigeon below awaiting any droppings ( of nuts ) I remember this pigeon doing this with a squirrel  and having the squirrel fall on him….he he…The long-tailed tit is easily recognisable with its distinctive colouring, a tail that is bigger than its body, and undulating flight. Gregarious and noisy residents, long-tailed tits are most usually noticed in small, excitable flocks of about 20 birds. Like most tits, they rove the woods and hedgerows, but are also seen on heaths and commons with suitable bushes.

Turtle Dove

Tweet of the Day : Turtle Dove ;  We have couple hanging around the bird feeder …sadly down to one…quiet recently ....but she still shows up...probably the tamest of the bunch. The turtle dove is a dainty dove, smaller and darker than the collared dove and slightly larger than a blackbird. Its upper-parts are distinctively mottled with chestnut and black and its black tail has a white edge.

Buzzard

Tweet of the Day : The Buzzard   : See these a lot as we drive around the fields here…They dive a lot but never seem to get much….I could be wrong…..Now the commonest and most widespread UK bird of prey. It is quite large with broad, rounded wings, and a short neck and tail. When gliding and soaring it will often hold its wings in a shallow 'V' and the tail is fanned. Birds are variable in colour from all dark brown to much paler variations, all have dark wingtips and a finely barred tail. Their plaintive mewing call could be mistaken for a cat.

Golden Eagle

Tweet of the Day : The Golden Eagle : I painted two of these golden eagles one last week and `i had another go this week....just wanted to see if I could get it looking windier on the ridge he was on....I love theta look birds in the wind....hope it works.A huge bird of prey, with only the white-tailed eagle larger in the UK. With its long broad wings and longish tail, it has a different outline to the smaller buzzard. It likes to soar and glide on air currents, holding its wings in a shallow 'V'. Eagles have traditional territories and nesting places which may be used by generations.

Shouting at the Storm

Tweet of the Day : Shouting at the Storm….The Great Black Backed Gull : Try saying that after a few lemonades….when you see one of these close up you'll be amazed at the size….they seem quite small when flying around…but close up ….enormous …..This one is shouting at the storm coming it doesn't seem to like it……t very large, thick-set black-backed gull, with a powerful beak. Adults are blacker than the smaller lesser black-backed gull. It has a heavy flight and can look quite hunched when perched. It will fight off other gulls and chase them to snatch food.
